ChariTree - During Advent, members may contribute financially to a variety of BCOC’s ministries. Gift cards are given so that donations may be received as Christmas gifts.

Cuba Partnership - BCOC has established a sister relationship with the Shalom Baptist Church of Boca de Mariel, Cuba. Our covenant with them includes praying for them, communicating with them, visiting them, helping them to visit us, and occasionally helping them in more tangible ways.

Dee Dah Day - A day of service opportunity in the community for all members of our congregation. Each spring one Sunday is designated as Dee Dah Day. After the worship service, groups of members go to area locations to build houses, paint offices, fix and serve meals, clean and do any number of other services for local charities. We need volunteers and also coordinators.

Greater Birmingham Ministries - An ecumenical, interfaith organization that responds to poverty issues through direct services, systems change/economic justice and community education. While we contribute financially, BCOC also participates in an annual canned food drive and Christmas toy drive.

Grocery Ministry – Each Saturday, volunteers transport senior adults to the grocery store and shop for shut-ins. Volunteers are needed each week to drive and to assist.

Hawley DHR Clothes Closet – The DHR Clothes Closet provides new or gently used clothing items for foster children. Volunteers go biweekly to sort and organize clothing items so that case workers can easily gather items to provide for foster parents.

Trunk or Treat - An annual neighborhood celebration on Halloween night. Church members dress up and provide games, prizes, books and food out of their car trunks for the children in the church’s neighborhood.

Arts Camp at Southtown - Each Summer BCOC members plan and implement an arts camp for children from BCOC and the Southtown community. Activities include stories and drama, music and dance, and arts and crafts. Camp is held for one week, 2 hours each day at the Southtown gym. Counselors include BCOC and Southtown adults and youth.

Family Promise (formally - Birmingham Hospitality Network) – BCOC partners with other Birmingham area congregations to provide temporary housing for homeless families. For one week each quarter church members provide a safe, secure, and welcoming environment. Volunteers prepare and serve meals, host in the evening, or stay overnight.

Backpack Ministry – BCOC partners with Community Food Bank to pack food for students on free lunch to take home over the weekend so that they have something to eat while out of school. Members may pack bags or deliver bags to area schools.

Bread for the World – Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decisions makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Moved by God’s grace in Jesus Christ, we advocate for a world without hunger. We provide an Offering of Letters annually and provide financial support to this organization.

Justice Issues Forum (JIF) The purpose of JIF is to provide information regarding social justice issues that require advocacy. JIF equips members with tools to advocate for changes that could bring about greater justice for the most vulnerable and disenfranchised in our world. Organizations that guide our choices on what we share with the congregation are Alabama Arise www.arise.org, Alabama Poverty Project (APP) www.alabamapossible.org, Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform www.constitutionalreform.org, and Bread for the World www.bread.org. Alabama Arise - Alabama Arise works to make Alabama better through research and advocacy for policies to improve the lives of low-income Alabamians. BCOC participates in advocacy and provide financial support for this organization.

Rogers’ Benevolence Fund - Received on the first Sunday of every month, financial gifts are used to provide vouchers for assistance requests that come to the church office daily.

Leadership Southtown - Every Wednesday evening and one Thursday evening per month BCOC hosts a tutoring/mentoring program for Southtown youth that are in middle and high school. Dinner, guest speakers, field trips, and summer camps are included.

Story Time at Southtown - On Tuesday afternoons throughout the school year, members of BCOC along with community volunteers meet at Southtown community center to engage elementary age children in literacy activities. They read stories, play games, and make crafts.

Support Teams – As a chaplain at UAB, Drexel encounters many families in need of support – patients with no family, families that are far away from home caring for a sick family member, etc. If you would be interested in provided support as the needs arise (sending a card, visiting, etc.), please let Dr. Rayford know to put you on his list of support team members.

Take What You Need - Different items are placed in ziplock bags on the church’s fence along University Boulevard for whoever happens along who may need them. BCOC youth and 5th and 6th grade missions education class write notes of invitation to include in the bags. A collection box is located in the church office.

Terra Nova Academy - Terra Nova Academy was founded in Kampala, Uganda in 2013 by BCOC member Alisha Damron-Surayange and her husband Abdul. The goal is to provide education that is financially accessible, academically excellent, and centered on Christian principles. BCOC members can provide monetary support, school supplies, or may participate in a visit when available.

Wednesday Night Community Meals – Each Wednesday night throughout the school year, we invite our neighbors to join with us in sharing a meal. Volunteers may sponsor guests by paying for extra meals via the U+1 program or by helping organize and host our guests on Wednesday evenings.

Prayer Shawl Ministry – Members meet together to create shawls and/or blankets for members and non-members who are ill. They offer prayer for the sick and encouragement for each other.

Animal Care Ministry - If a BCOC member is unable to care for a beloved pet because of a temporary emergency situation, care team members will provide pet care until the member can resume care of the pet or other arrangements can be made.
